Question by Vic S: How does chanting a word or a mantra helps mentally? Looking for pure scientific explanation.?

I found several sites which explains the benefits of chanting mantra but none of those were scientific in nature. I am looking for some reference or pure scientific explanation for the mental benefit that can be derived out of chanting.

It quiets the mind’s activity and if properly done, causes deep breathing (the diaphragm expands downward, not the lungs outward). 20 minutes of this is very relaxing to the body. You’ll “wake up” feeling refreshed and relaxed and ready for your next challenge.
